1. Scraping & topic analysis

Discover and define the issue

This is the first stage of the model, dedicated to scraping and analysing the societal challenges - challenging topics of the future. If you already have a topic from which to start you can skip the scraping stage (a) and start analysing your topic through (b) and (c) part. Otherwise, select the challenge/topic you believe you could contribute as a designer. Remember that this model is suitable if you are designing the technological artefacts and services, dealing with the topics of sustainability and human behaviour.

(a) Select the challenge [what you are interested to explore]:

Select the challenge/topic you believe you could contribute as a designer. This model is suitable if you are designing the technological artefacts and services, dealing with the topics of sustainability and human behaviour. If you already have the topic/brief you can start from that. Otherwise, you can inspire on the emergent societal challenges i.e. New Green Deal, SDGs.

(b) Percieved [dis]beliefs:

This part of the Protocol is about analysing the collective imaginaries about the future (i.e. through the SCI-FI genre - Envisioning Tool). The popular culture, together with designers and filmmakers, is giving representations of the future (i.e. political, social, moral sphere, environment, etc.), founded on a [dis]beliefs and constructions about the futures, often represented as utopic or dystopic visions, concerning the ethical, political, environmental issues. We invite you to reflect on some of these [dis]beliefs related to your topic to understand which are the fears and disbeliefs about the future, and why it is like this. How probable are these scenarios, considering also the historical/political/social period they were made.

(c) What do we need to change?:

What is the role of designer and design discipline in addressing the specific problem (i.e., environmental issues, health and wellbeing, safety of citizens, and others)? How could you contribute to change? What could be the role of technologies in these processes? Set the design requirements for the future.
